Ilam Campus Gallery is pleased to host ‘nth degree’, an exhibition featuring recent work by nine graduating MFA students. Curated by art history doctoral candidate Barbara Garrie, the exhibition features work by: Nicole Bourke, Jane Bowman, Bianca van Leeuwen, Paul McLachlan, Nathan Pohio, Julie Ross, Alison Staniland, Katie Thomas and Tjalling de Vries. As curator Barbara Garrie writes: ‘The works selected for ‘nth degree’ pick up on a particular tone that resonates in various ways through the practices of all nine artists; a fascination with process, a meticulous attention to detail and a compulsive approach to the making of art.’

The exhibition preview of ‘nth degree’ will also coincide with the launch of the 2011 issue of Oculus. Founded in 2008, Oculus: Postgraduate Journal for Visual Arts Research is an internationally peer reviewed publication produced annually by postgraduate students from the Department of Art History and Theory and the School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury. Oculus provides a valuable platform for postgraduate research and offers students the opportunity to present their work and develop vital skills in aspects of academic publishing.Issue No. 3 of Oculus features a selection of essays, studio research, interviews and exhibition reviews by postgraduate students working at various tertiary institutions throughout New Zealand and Australia. Oculus will be on sale for $15.00 at the School of Fine Arts. It can be purchased by UC staff and students for $10.00.
