Symptoms of Incompatibility: Zina Swanson

swanson

21 July - 29 August

Opening preview: Tuesday 20 July, 5.30pm
SOFA Gallery, The Arts Centre, Christchurch

In ‘Symptoms of Incompatibility’ Zina Swanson presents an elaborate and fragile network of experimental unions. By pushing her watercolour drawings into three dimensions, Swanson has created an installation at once beguiling and challenging in its complexity. As Aaron Lister writes in his catalogue essay, Swanson ‘uses the gallery as a rogue laboratory to test propositions that extend well beyond the purely sculptural’. Mimicking circulatory systems, the installation combines delicate hand-blown glass tubes with tree grafting techniques to hint at the potential union of human and vegetable, living and dead. As Lister also notes, the exhibition stands as part of Swanson’s continuing investigations into ‘the transformative and restorative potential of fragile natural materials where the most delicate and unlikely of objects are invested with new forces and energies.’
